July Wrap-Up

First of all, I would like to apologize for my lack of activity. I have been so busy with work and driving home, and last time I was home I forgot my laptop charger, so I literally couldn’t do anything web-related. But, I’m back!

For the month of July, I had extremely high expectations on how many books I wanted to read for the month. If you watch my “July To Be Read”video on Youtube, you’ll see that I wanted to read 8 books this month.

But, alas, I only read 6. I’m happy that I did manage to read 6 though, because I’m getting closer to my Goodreads goal.

Also, add me on Goodreads if you want to see what I’m reading and detailed reviews of books!

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie – 4/5

I read this during July because I didn’t read it for my Young Adult Literature class like I was supposed to, but I heard everyone talk about how great and inspiring it was, so I had to read it. I thought that Sherman Alexie gave a great representation on a teenager who is struggling to find himself. The main character Junior had so much wit and humor through out the novel, it was entertaining to see how he took on life. The illustrations were also a great addition to the book! Really enjoyed this!

milk and honey  by Rapi Kaur – 5/5

I have not read a lot of poetry in my life, but I am so happy I chose to buy this book. Kaur’s words are so deep and personal. She vividly shows her hardships in the most poetic way. If you only read one book of poetry in your life, please let it be this one. Rupi Kaur is a talented poet, and I hope she releases something else soon.

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King – 3/5

This book took me so long to read. I started July 2nd and couldn’t finish until July 18th. I know that may not seem like a long time, but it truly was. The reason is because from page 100 to 300 the story was SO BORING. I thought in terms of it being a crime novel, it was a decent book with a good story. I liked the criminal Brady Hartfield, simply because it was really interesting to be able to see the thoughts going on in his head. But even he annoyed me because of his childish personality. I know that sometimes it’s easy to get angry, but Brady’s “psychotic episodes” made him seem 12. I do plan on reading the next two books in the trilogy though, I am curious as to where Stephen King goes with the storyline.

Looking for Alaska  by John Green – 4/5

I reread this hoping that John Green could still speak to me in ways I’ll never understand, and he still can. It’s something about this book that makes me think about the deeper things in life and how to survive the “labyrinth of suffering”. Alaska Young reminds me off myself at times, as does Miles. This book also makes me view death in such a different way. Once again, Looking for Alaska gave me massive feels and brought on many tears.

Cinder by Marissa Meyers – 4/5

I will admit that it took me a long time to get into this book. At first, I couldn’t see what all the hype was about. Cinder started off really slow, and the narration just felt too confusing to me. Because of this, I stopped reading for about two weeks. Yesterday I decided that I would try and pick it up again and it was the best decision I’ve made. I finished the last half of the book right now, and it’s 3:30 in the morning.
The book was either really slow or extremely fast paced which was a little off putting for me, but the character development and the plot was enough for me to ignore the pace. While I predicted the ending about halfway through the book, there were still parts that I didn’t expect and it left me pleasantly surprised.
Meyer gives such a unique twist on the classic Cinderella story. I honestly didn’t expect that I would like this book, but I really enjoyed how it turned out. I just ordered the rest of the books in the series and will definitely be reading them soon.

About You by JoJo Moyes – 4/5

I read Me Before You last month and I fell in love with the book, so I had high expectations for After You. Moyes writes about Louisa’s life after Will, her love interest in the first book. I read reviews that a lot of people didn’t like this book, because it didn’t have the same feel as Me Before You, so I tried to read it as a separate book and I think it helped alot. I absolutely adored this book. I enjoyed the new love interest and the book was also a lot more suspenseful. I was a little skeptical when they first introduced Will’s daughter, but I think it worked out perfectly. If you love Me Before You, I suggest you read this one as well.

Well that was all the books I read in the month of July. If you want to see what I’m reading in August, I’ll be posting a picture soon on my bookstagram account so be sure to follow me there!

What did you read in July? xx
